Windshield Tint Strip & Ceramic Visor Strip in El Cajon | Cali Auto Glass & Tint

If you are bothered by sun glare through your windshield but cannot legally tint the full windshield in California, a windshield tint strip (also called a visor strip or ceramic visor band) is the legal and effective solution. At Cali Auto Glass & Tint in El Cajon, we install ceramic windshield tint strips for drivers across San Diego County, starting at just $49.

I install these strips regularly for customers who commute west during morning hours and east during afternoon rush, when sun glare is at its worst on San Diego freeways. Here is everything you need to know.

Is a Windshield Tint Strip Legal in California?

Yes. California Vehicle Code Section 26708 allows a tinted strip along the top of the windshield, provided it does not extend below the AS-1 line or more than 4 to 5 inches from the top of the windshield glass. This strip can be any darkness within that zone. Most drivers choose a dark shade (5% to 20% VLT) for maximum glare reduction at the top of their field of view.

Ceramic vs. Standard Visor Strip Film

We offer two types of windshield visor strips:

  • Standard dyed film: Budget-friendly, blocks visible light and some UV, but can turn purple and bubble in San Diego’s sun within 2 to 3 years
  • Ceramic visor strip: Our recommendation. Rejects solar heat, blocks 99.9% UV, does not fade or discolor, rated 10 years or more. The price difference is usually $20 to $30 and worth it.

Ceramic film is our top choice for all San Diego climates because of the intense UV exposure. Learn more about why ceramic outperforms standard film: Ceramic Tint vs. Regular Tint in San Diego.

Benefits of a Windshield Visor Strip

  • Reduces glare: Especially effective for eastbound morning and westbound afternoon commutes on I-8 and SR-94
  • UV protection: Blocks UV reaching your face and eyes, reducing sun damage risk
  • Dashboard protection: Even a small strip reduces UV that fades your upper dashboard
  • Pairs with side tinting: Completes the tint package for full sun protection

Frequently Asked Questions: Windshield Tint Strip El Cajon

Is a windshield tint strip legal in California?

Yes. California law allows a tinted strip along the top portion of the windshield, limited to the top 4 to 5 inches or above the AS-1 line. This strip can be any shade. It is one of the few legal ways to add windshield tinting in California. Full guide: California Window Tint Laws.

How much does a windshield tint strip cost in El Cajon?

Ceramic windshield visor strips start at $49 at our El Cajon shop. The exact price depends on the width of the strip and the film type chosen. Ceramic film costs slightly more than standard film but lasts significantly longer in San Diego’s climate.

How long does windshield tint strip installation take?

The installation takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. There is a brief cure period for the adhesive, but you can drive away the same day. We recommend waiting 24 to 48 hours before washing the windshield in the strip area.

Will a visor strip block my view while driving?

No, when installed correctly. The strip covers only the top few inches of the windshield, which is above most drivers’ direct line of sight. It blocks the low-angle sun that typically causes glare without obstructing your forward field of view. This is why it is legal in California.

Can I have any shade installed on a windshield tint strip?

Yes, within the legal zone (top 4 to 5 inches), any shade is permitted. Most customers choose 5% to 20% VLT for maximum glare reduction. For lighter glare protection, 35% VLT is also popular. We can show you samples before you decide.

Does a windshield tint strip help with sun glare on San Diego freeways?

Yes, significantly. The I-8 and SR-94 corridors run east-west, meaning commuters face direct sun glare every morning and afternoon. A ceramic visor strip blocks the sun at the top of your windshield where the sun visor cannot reach, reducing eye strain and improving safety.

Can I add window tinting on my other windows at the same time?

Absolutely. Many customers combine a windshield visor strip with full side and rear window tinting in a single appointment. This is the most cost-effective approach. See our full pricing: Window Tinting Cost in San Diego.
