Headlight and taillight tinting has its own legal rules in California, separate from window tint law, and getting it wrong can mean a fix-it ticket. Here’s what the law actually covers.
Headlights
California Vehicle Code requires headlights to produce white or amber light and maintain a minimum level of light output — tint that’s too dark can reduce visibility below the legal threshold and fail inspection, even if it looks fine to the eye. Lighter smoke tints that don’t meaningfully reduce output are generally the safer choice for staying compliant.
Taillights
Taillights and brake lights must remain red and clearly visible from behind — overly dark taillight tint that makes brake lights hard to distinguish from running lights is a common reason for a fix-it ticket. Turn signals have their own requirement to stay amber or red, depending on your vehicle’s setup.
Why There Isn’t One Fixed Legal Number
Unlike window tint, which has a specific VLT percentage threshold, headlight and taillight tint law is enforced more on functional output and visibility than a single hard number — part of why some tinted lights get pulled over and others don’t, even at similar-looking darkness. An experienced installer knows which shade levels reliably stay compliant and which invite a stop.
