California law regulates the color and visibility of vehicle lighting, and headlight/taillight film is treated differently from window tint — there is no single published VLT percentage for lights the way there is for windows. Law enforcement is generally checking that headlights still project white/amber light at legal brightness and that taillights and brake lights remain clearly visible as red from a reasonable distance, day and night. Very dark or reflective finishes that noticeably dim output or shift the light's true color are the kind more likely to draw a fix-it ticket.
We install film shades chosen to keep your lights functionally compliant, and we're happy to talk through the tradeoffs for your specific vehicle before you commit. If your local jurisdiction has stricter rules than the state standard, that takes priority — when in doubt, ask us and we'll give you a straight answer.
